Store Elgvasshøe // Top (1606m)

A hard hike to a rocky summit with the most beautiful view on the steep backside of Høgrunden, the second highest mountain in Rondane National Park. Park your car somewhere around the Elgevasslien farm (not too close!) and find the trailhead at the south side of the farm. Follow the, not signposted, trail upwards through the forest and cross vast wetlands once you are above tree level. The trail might sometimes not be visible! Leave the trail to right side once you have reached the steep southern side of Store Elgvasshøe and start climbing/scrambling to the top. There is no trail and you just try to find the easiest way up. Cross the top, enjoy the view and go downwards on the northern side of the mountain following more or less the direction of a river bed. This section is very technical with sliding rocks. Walk into the forest and keep your eyes open for moose that are regularly spotted here. Take a break or have a swim in the lake before following the gravel path back to the farm.

A hard hike which is not signposted, requires good navigation skills and a high level of fitness. Not suitable for people suffering from vertigo.
