Longer and challenging hike, but without the elevation gain of a high summit tour. It strings together many highlights of Rondane National Park and is bursting with variety. Start at the parking area near Straumbu viewpoint, follow the sandy shore of the Atna river north and cross the suspension bridge to get to the other side. Turn immediately left and follow the red T-s in the direction of Bjørnhollia. The first part is quite flat through dense forest with some bridged rivers. After about 1km, you start climbing gradually until you get above tree level. From now on you can enjoy spectacular views on the highest peaks of the national park, such as Høgronden and Rondeslottet. Keep on following the red T-s through the stony terrain with occasional small river crossings. Right after the highest point, you will see the mountain cabin of Bjørnhollia in the valley. You reach it by going down sherpa stairs, traversing the valley with some old timber buildings and crossing the bridge over the river to the right. Please notice the cabin is only staffed during high season (middle of June until middle of September). They serve drinks and some smaller dishes during that time. After the break go up straight behind the cabin and follow the signposting towards Dørålseter. You hike along some private cabins and follow the provision road for about 800m after which the hiking trail spinns off to your left. It’s signposted again with red T-s through stony terrain, goes slighly upwards before slowly going down again to the Langglupdalen-valley. Once you reach the valley a small bridge crosses the river and you will see a beatiful series of waterfalls to your left. It’s the perfect stop for another break and some sunbathing on the terraced formed rocks. Then go, quite steep, up again on the other side of the valley until you reach a cairn indicating a main crossroads in the trail network. From here you have a great view onto Rondeslottet (2.178m), the highest mountain in the national park. Make sure to turn right here in the direction of Straumbu. You go down in a small but picturesque valley which circumpasses Veslkollhøe, a smaller mountain, to your right. It’s a quite easy section but can get swampy especially after rain. At the end of the valley the trail winds downwards into a more flat area where thin forest starts to appear. Just before reaching the provision road to Bjørnhollia again, you have to cross a small canyon. Cross the road and keep on following the marked trail downwards while the forest gets more and more dense. Stay right or straight on whenever there is another trailhead to your left. The last part is quite flat and you have to cross a few smaller bridges before you end up again at the suspension bridge over Atna river and the parking place.
Good fitness, sure-footedness and navigation skills required. The track is completely signposted with red T-s but make sure follow the right direction at junctions. Be prepared for stony/slippery tracks, wetlands and some smaller river crossings. Walking sticks are recommended.
