Straumbu // Bjørnhollia loop (DNT cabin)

One of the most beautiful (and popular) hikes of moderate difficulty in Rondane National Park. Start at the parking area near Straumbu viewpoint, follow the sandy shore of the Atna river north and cross the suspension bridge to get to the other side. Turn immediately left and follow the red T-s in the direction of Bjørnhollia. The first part is quite flat through dense forest with some bridged rivers. After about 1km, you start climbing gradually until you get above tree level. From now on you can enjoy spectacular views on the highest peaks of the national park, such as Høgronden and Rondeslottet. Keep on following the red T-s through the stony terrain with occasional small river crossings. Right after the highest point, you will see the mountain cabin of Bjørnhollia in the valley. You reach it by going down sherpa stairs, traversing the valley with some old timber buildings and crossing the bridge over the river to the right. Please notice the cabin is only staffed during high season (middle of June until middle of September). They serve drinks and some smaller dishes during that time. Return to the bridge and walk straight on in the direction of Rondetunet. The next part is quite easy following a gravel trail almost parallel to the lake. After a small river crossing you get to an old summer farm before descending to a bridge made of guardrails. Cross it and turn almost immediately left on the smaller trail to Straumbu. Follow this single track trail through a beautiful pine forest until you get back to the main trail to Bjørnhollia. When being silent, it’s not uncommon to spot occasional wildlife here. Be prepared for some balancing exercises during the last part when you have to cross a few rivers and a swampy wetland over narrow tree trunks. Follow the main track back to the parking lot but this time in the opposite direction.

Good fitness, sure-footedness and navigation skills required. The track is signposted with red T-s from Straumbu to Bjørnhollia and until the bridge made of guardrails. Be prepared for stony/slippery tracks, wetlands and some smaller river crossings. Walking sticks are recommended.
