PRIVATE BACKCOUNTRY SKI COURSE

Have you tried cross country skiing or alpine skiing, but are you keen to discover the adventure and freedom of backcountry skiing? Then this backcountry skiing course might be the perfect package to get you started! The technique is comparable with cross country skiing, but you don’t need to stay on just groomed trails. You stay 3 nights in a cosy hotel room at Rondane River Lodge including full board. One night will be spent at a simple but cosy self-serviced DNT-cabin in the national park. Over three days of skiing in the company of your own private guide, you will gain the skills you need to do longer and more challenging tours.

Also kids from 12 years old with an active mindset are welcome to join this package.

This program is just an example and can be tailormade according to your wishes.

Day 1: arrival in winter wonderland

The hosts welcome you at Rondane River Lodge and inform you about the program for the next days taking into account your previous experience and the weather forecast. For sure you will be charmed instantly by the cosy lodge and the snowy forest around. Relax in your comfortable hotel room.

Day 2: backcountry skiing introduction day

Rondane National Park has unlimited possibilities for backcountry skiing. This is the oldest form of skiing, once developed in Norway to cross the vast plateaus. These slightly wider skis offer more stability than cross country skis, have steel edges and skins can be attached for extra grip when going up- or downhill. It’s not very technical and previous experience with skiing is not even necessary. Today gives you the opportunity to ski both on prepared trails and “off-track”, where backcountry skis really come into the their own. The terrain is undulating without very long ascents or descents, but there will of course be some ups and downs. Halfway we enjoy a tasty wilderness lunch in the middle of nowhere. It’s also possible to try skiing with a pulk behind you. Your return to the lodge in the afternoon to relax, stretch out those tired muscles in front of the fire, order a craft beer from the bar and look forward to dinnertime.

Day 3: overnight backcountry skiing trip to a mountain cabin

After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, it’s time to head to the mountains for your overnight expedition to put what you learned the day before into practice and continue building your confidence and improving your technique. Depending on weather conditions and the level of challenge appropriate, there are a number of possible options for your ski tour. But whichever route you take, the scenery will be spectacular! You will normally be heading to one of the cabins operated by DNT, which operates a network of simple but comfortable cabins in the mountains, heated by wood-burning stove with outdoor toilet and shared sleeping accommodation in bunk beds. Simple meals will be prepared together.

Day 4: return to the lodge

You will normally take a different route today as you head out from the mountain cabin accommodation to make your way back. On return to the lodge, dinner and a sauna await to welcome you back from the mountains. Congratulations on completing your overnight expedition! You should now be well on the way to developing your skills as a backcountry skier.
