  • HIKING WEEK IN RONDANE

During this individual hiking week, you experience all the highlights of Rondane, mainly on foot. Rondane River Lodge serves as your basecamp. You climb Mount Pika and visit the local goat farm. You help the local shepherd with checking or gathering sheep. You explore the heart of the national park during a self-guided 3-days trekking with stay in mountain huts. This program can be tailormade and optional activities of your choice, can be added.

    Day 1:

The hosts welcome you at Rondane River Lodge and inform you about the program for the next days. Check-in in your comfortable hotel room or log cabin and enjoy a home-made 3 courses welcome dinner in the restaurant.

    Day 2:

Early transfer to Øverdalssætra where you will meet the goats at a traditional seter (mountain farm). You are free to help during the miking process and can taste freshly made goatcheese during a typical Norwegian breakfast at the farm. Start climbing Mount Pika afterwards (1157m) with a 360° view over the surrounding mountains and Rondane National Park. Count about 3 to 4 hours to complete the hike before descending to Rondane River Lodge again. On request the hike can also be guided.

    Day 3:

Today you join the local shepherd on the vast mountainplateau of Øyerfjellet. After a long winter in the barn, Norwegian sheep are released in the mountains by the end of May. Accompanied by numerous lambs, they roam freely around until the end of August. Then it’s time to gather them again before the first snow comes. When hiking together with the local shepherd you get to know everything about sheep whilst enjoying the beautiful mountain pastures at the same time.

This is a unique chance to experience this unique tradition from the front row. Not to forget the fantastic landscapes you will encounter while searching for sheep. Tired but definitely satisfied you return to the lodge for a tasteful dinner.

    Day 4:

Prepare yourself for a 3 days guided trekking in Rondane National Park. Transfer to Grimsdalen from where you start the first leg to Dørålseter (circa 5h30 hiking). Halfway through the picturesque Haverdalen invites for a lunch break. Dinner and overnight at the authentic mountain hut of Nedre Dørålseter in shared rooms.

    Day 5:

After breakfast you head further south in the direction of Bjørnhollia. There are 2 routes possible depending on the weather conditions and abilities of the group. Either you follow the sheltered Langglupdalen (circa 7h00 hiking) or you climb over Høgronden (2118m), the third highest but most spectacular peak in the national park (circa 10h00 hiking). Dinner and overnight in the charming mountain hut of Bjørnhollia in shared rooms.

    Day 6:

The last leg goes over the treeless slopes of Geitsida and through Voldalen towards Rondetunet. Enjoy the magnificent views on Lake Atnasjø while hiking. Short transfer back to Rondane River Lodge for a well deserved dinner and overnight in a comfortable room or log cabin.

    Day 7:

Enjoy a rest day or sign up for an additional activity of your choice. We can recommend cycling, horse riding or improve your survival skills during a bushcraft introduction with a skilled guide. Or increase your chances to spot the local wildlife when signing up for a musk ox safari or twilight moose safari. Or enjoy some river fun while canoeing, white water rafting, canyoning or fishing.
