  • HIKING AND PACKRAFTING IN RONDANE

During this active week in late summer you experience all the highlights of Rondane. Rondane River Lodge serves as your basecamp from where you climb Mount Pika, help the local farmer with gathering sheep, explore the national park during a 3-days trekking and get an introduction in the art of packrafting.

    Day 1:

The hosts welcome you at Rondane River Lodge and inform you about the program for the next days. Check-in in your comfortable hotel room or log cabin and enjoy a home-made 3 courses welcome dinner in the restaurant.

    Day 2:

After a tasty breakfast you are transferred to Øverdalssætra from where you start climbing Mount Pika (1157m). From the top you enjoy a 360° view over the surrounding mountains and Rondane National Park. Count about 3 to 4 hours to complete this guided hike before reaching Rondane River Lodge again.

    Day 3:

Today you join the local sheep farmer. In the end of August the sheep are gathered from the pastures above the tree level and brought back to the valleys where they spend the winter. This is a unique chance to experience this unique tradition from the front row. Not to forget the fantastic landscapes you will encounter while searching for sheep. Tired but definitely satisfied you return to the lodge for a tasteful dinner.

    Day 4:

Prepare yourself for a 3 days guided trekking in Rondane National Park. Transfer to Grimsdalen from where you start the first leg to Dørålseter (circa 5h30 hiking). Halfway through the picturesque Haverdalen invites for a lunch break. Dinner and overnight at the authentic mountain hut of Nedre Dørålseter in shared rooms.

    Day 5:

After breakfast you head further south in the direction of Bjørnhollia. There are 2 routes possible depending on the weather conditions and abilities of the group. Either you follow the sheltered Langglupdalen (circa 7h00 hiking) or you climb over Høgronden (2118m), the third highest but most spectacular peak in the national park (circa 10h00 hiking). Dinner and overnight in the charming mountain hut of Bjørnhollia in shared rooms.

    Day 6:

The last leg goes over the treeless slopes of Geitsida and through Voldalen towards Rondetunet. Enjoy the magnificent views on Lake Atnasjø while hiking. Short transfer back to Rondane River Lodge for a well deserved dinner and overnight in a comfortable room or log cabin.

    Day 7:

Prepare your own lunch package from the breakfast buffet and short transfer to the Atna River. Here you get a professional introduction about packrafting. After some theory, you jump into the lightweight and inflatable packrafts. On a calm flat stretch of water you will get to know the different paddling techniques and learn how to swim and reenter the boat if you tip over. At the end of the day you will also get to paddle your first waves.
